Volunteer Opportunities

Thanks to our interns from ASU School of Social Work who shared their talents and were willing to learn with us this past year:
Ernesto Lopez, Rebecca Villanueva, Rosemary Hollister, Elizabeth Schepel and Vera Dawes.

They helped develop a board orientation manual, agency policies, put together our community education workshops, supported the Abriendo Puertas program, and Promotora program, promoted the development of the children in the early childhood program, tutored women in English, and, when needed, mopped floors, served food and helped set up for community celebrations. They quickly learned that community service sometimes entails doing a bit of everything.

Message from the Executive Director

Lorraine with BroomAs Unlimited Potential's fiscal year draws to a close, I am mindful of the numerous accomplishments achieved this year. Fifty eight women completed the adult literacy classes and showed gains in reading, writing, and speaking English. Twenty-eight children participated in the early childhood program and have come closer to having the skills they need to begin kindergarten ready to learn. Fourteen mothers participated in the Motheread/Fatheread Program. They revealed they are reading more for personal pleasure, thereby modeling reading habits for their children, and they are also reading several times a week with their children.

Photo OpportunityWhile these undertakings are wonderful, what remains foremost in my mind are the voices of the women. I hear Marianna as she shares that her son was having trouble in school, not wanting to do his homework, complaining that it was too hard. She wisely acknowledged his feelings and went on to tell him that if, at her age, she could study and get her GED he could do it too. She made him accountable and modeled diligence.

As we said our goodbyes for the year, I recall Brigida who expressed her gratitude to Unlimited Potential. After one year in the literacy classes, she is reading and writing in both English and Spanish, a huge feat, as she never had the opportunity to attend school until now.

Branching OutI hear the mothers from the Motheread Program as they complain in jest that now all their children want to do is read the same book over and over and over again. I laugh knowing that they are as delighted as I am that their children have developed a love for books.

I remember the voices of the women who, after studying the history of Cesar Chavez, expressed their awe over his humility and commitment to service. They verbalize that they too need to engage in the struggle of advocating for themselves.

2010 Staff Participants in the adult leadership program decided to begin fundraising through bake sales and raffles in order to support a couple of graduates from the second year adult literacy class in continuing their education at the community college.

These personal accounts of enhanced literacy and empowerment are what inspire me. By sharing these stories, I hope to give our Unlimited Potential supporters a glimpse of the impact they have had on the lives of families.
Thanks to all of you who make the work Unlimited Potential engages in possible.
Sincerely,
Lorraine Moya Salas,
Executive Director
How To Help

Program Update: Joyful End-of-Year Celebration

BuffetAt the end of the year celebration, families gathered to rejoice in their accomplishments. Children proudly received their certificates of achievement and mothers too humbly accepted recognition for a year well done.

Family members joined participants in singing "Greatest Love of All," in viewing the end of the year video, created by volunteer Esther Blue, and enjoyed the children singing the songs they had learned throughout the year.

In the video, participants described why it was so important for them to learn English. One participant stated, "I want to speak English to talk with the teacher about my children and build a better future." Participant with Diploma Board Chair, Juan Rodriguez, participated in a skit with the women that reflected how learning English helps them to support their children's education as they now feel prepared to volunteer in their children's school. All involved had a joyous time.

While the adult literacy and early childhood program have ended for the year, the GED program is off to a sensational start. Twenty students are enrolled in the program. We have a fabulous new GED teacher, Robert Decker, who manages the sometimes challenging task of making learning fun. It is not uncommon to hear laughter as students take a break from the sometimes stressful task of learning new material. Good luck, students!

Participant Tells Story of Her Multi-Level Learning Success
GabrielaHi, my name is Gabriela Vera!

I am a student of the English program at UP. For me personally, UP helped me a lot this year, it makes me feel at home and teachers become our friends and many time our confidants.

I was able to participate in different classes, workshops, programs where I learned many things. For example, on Monday I had Leadership class where I learned important things that helped me personally and helped my family and my community; it did not just help me but all of us who participated in the leadership program.

On Tuesdays is Motheread/Fatheread for parents, it helped me value reading times with my daughters and mostly with my 7-year-old. What was for her a punishment, making her read, today is her school. Her reading greatly improved and she was recognized for this in her class. I learned to make the reading interesting and entertaining for all of us.

Thursdays, we had computer classes where I learned to use a memory stick, create power points, how to get information; various vehicles, as the instructor Francisco calls them. It could be that many people knew this already; now I know it too.

Additionally, in the childcare program, my daughter at the age of only 3 learned from the teachers her colors, shapes, songs-including the ABCs; she learned to socialize with children her age.

Thanks to the people who adopted us during the Christmas holiday and helped us to enjoy an unforgettable Christmas, because of them we had a tree, presents, and even cupcakes that we enjoyed at Christmas dinner.

Thank you Unlimited Potential for existing! Thank you, also, to those involved in the program and those who donate. I want to let you know that your resources are not wasted and many needy families take advantage of the opportunity to learn all that Unlimited Potential teaches.
