OUR GROWTH

Expanded English Literacy Program

With support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust this year, Unlimited Potential is able to fulfill the request of participants by providing a 3rd level English class.

PARTICIPANTS COMMENT:

"I wanted this class because I have a goal to go college."

"This class will help me open doors to college and employment."

"We continue building a strong house that will not be easily blown away. We are driven by outcomes that demonstrate the positive impact Unlimited Potential has on the lives of families and by the voices of participants who share learning English, refining life skills, discovering a community of support, and rediscovering their belief that it is never too late to achieve educational goals."

Dear Friend,

This year marks Unlimited Potential's 30th year of strengthening families in South Phoenix.
We have much to celebrate. The center is serving more families than ever: 160 parents in English as a second language classes, 70 in the GED program, and 35 toddlers and preschoolers in the early childhood program.
Hundreds more families are empowered through the Abriendo Puertas parent education and leadership program and the Promotora Program. We survived the Great Recession "by the hair of our chinny chin chin" and thankfully were able to grow with the assistance of loyal donors, volunteers, and dedicated board members.
Achieving the center mission meant using effective strategies, measuring what we do so that those who invest know their investment was well spent, and collaborating with community partners who similarly believe all children deserve a quality education and the opportunity to be healthy.
Unlimited Potential is intent on fostering resilient parents and stronger communities for at least another 30 years. We are going forward brighter and stronger.

Program Update: Third Year ESL Class
Preparing parents for employment and college

Year after year, participants expressed wanting a 3rd year English literacy class. Unlimited Potential's English program has long been a two year program. Students begin in the introductory class where they increase English vocabulary and learn basic sentence structure and life skills that assist them supporting their children's education.

In the second year of the program, students enter the more advanced class where grammar and writing skills are enhanced, participants further develop English verbal skills, and they increase their knowledge of health. Consistent with what partici-pants have been saying for years, the literature indicates a second language cannot be mastered in 2 years. Generally it takes 3 to 5 years to develop oral proficiency and up to 7 years to develop academic competence in a second language.

With support from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, this year Unlimited Potential is able to fulfill the request of participants by providing a 3rd level English class. In the class, participants continue to develop communication, writing and reading skills moving them one step closer to English mastery and they develop the competencies necessary to secure employment and continue their education in college.

Thank you for supporting us in creating a healthy Arizona for all of our families!
